A possible move to Linux
I’ve made several furtive attempts to adopt Linux, but I always crawl back to macOS after a few days of death by 1,000 cuts. Say what you will about macOS, but it’s polished and complete and very pleasant to use. We like to mock the “Just Works” thing, but for me, macOS has always just worked.
So why the urge to move to Linux? Fair question, and one I don’t have a good answer for. I’d say it’s mostly curiosity. The idea of an open, free operating system that is entirely under my control is pretty compelling. I’d be willing to make a few compromises in order to have that. But my attempts so far have involved too many compromises.
The idea of being a “Linux person” is also attractive to me. I’m not sure why, but it feels subversive, somehow. Kind of like using Mac was subversive in the 90s.
One thing I’ve determined is that I would rather not try using both macOS and Linux. There’s too much work involved with bindings and paths and software and whatnot. Besides, my brain is so riddled with how macOS works that having immediate access to it has contributed to failing to move to Linux. I hope that makes sense. Basically, it needs to be one or the other. If I try using both, I’ll never adopt Linux.
